Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivar Abhiyaan: A Comprehensive Initiative to Transform Women’s Health in India

New Delhi: In a landmark move to bolster healthcare and nutrition services for women and children across the nation, the Government of India is launching the “Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivar Abhiyaan” (Healthy Woman, Strong Family Campaign). The nationwide initiative, which is being inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 17, 2025, will run until October 2, 2025. This intensified campaign, led by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) in close convergence with the Ministry of Women and Child Development (MoWCD), marks what officials are calling India’s largest-ever health mobilization drive for women and children.

The “Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivar Abhiyaan” is not just a health campaign; it is a holistic effort to advance the Prime Minister’s vision of a “Viksit Bharat” (developed India) by 2047. By placing the health and well-being of women and children at the forefront of its public health strategy, the government is laying the foundation for a stronger, healthier, and more empowered society. The initiative recognizes that the health of women is the health of the family, and a healthy family is the bedrock of a robust nation.

Unprecedented Scale and Reach

The campaign’s scale is unprecedented. Over 1 lakh health camps are being organized at Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, Community Health Centres (CHCs), District Hospitals (DHs), and other government health facilities nationwide. These camps will provide comprehensive preventive, promotive, and curative health services at the community level. This includes screenings for non-communicable diseases (NCDs), cancer, tuberculosis (TB), anaemia, and sickle cell disease. Additionally, the campaign will offer crucial maternal, child, and adolescent health services, including antenatal care, immunisation, and nutrition counselling. The goal is to ensure that quality healthcare is not a luxury but an accessible right for every woman and child, especially in remote and underserved areas.

One of the unique aspects of this campaign is its “Jan Bhagidari,” or “people’s participation,” approach. The government has appealed to private hospitals, NGOs, and various community organizations to join the initiative, expanding the quality and outreach of services. This collaborative model, which also includes the active participation of frontline health workers such as ASHA and Anganwadi workers, self-help groups (SHGs), and youth volunteers, is expected to mobilize communities at the grassroots level.

A Holistic Approach to Health and Well-being

Beyond clinical services, the “Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivar Abhiyaan” is also driving a major push for public health awareness. Alongside the launch of the campaign, the government is also launching the 8th “Poshan Maah” (Nutrition Month). This convergence is a strategic move to address the interconnected issues of health and nutrition simultaneously. Awareness campaigns on anaemia prevention, balanced diets, and menstrual hygiene are integral parts of the initiative, ensuring a holistic approach to women’s and adolescent girls’ health. The Ministry of Ayush is also participating in the campaign, offering traditional and holistic health services such as yoga sessions, lifestyle counselling, and the promotion of medicinal plants for women’s well-being.

This multi-sectoral approach underscores a key understanding: a healthy nation requires more than just healthcare facilities. It requires a shift in community mindset, a focus on preventive care, and the integration of diverse wellness practices. The campaign will also include voluntary blood donation drives, promoting community engagement and service. The integration of various government departments and ministries, including Education, Tribal Affairs, and Youth Affairs, ensures that the campaign’s message and services reach a wide and diverse audience.

A Legacy of Progress

The “Swasth Nari, Sashakt Parivar Abhiyaan” builds on India’s impressive progress in maternal and child health. According to recent government data, India’s Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) has significantly decreased from 130 per 100,000 live births in 2014-16 to 93 in 2019-21. The Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) has also dropped from 39 per 1,000 live births in 2014 to 27 per 1,000 in 2021. This campaign aims to accelerate this progress by closing existing gaps, such as the high levels of anaemia among women and regional disparities in healthcare access.

The fortnight-long campaign is more than a series of health camps; it is a national resolve to ensure that every woman and child has the opportunity to live a healthy, productive life. It is an investment in the future of India, where a healthy woman becomes the foundation of a strong family, and a strong family, in turn, builds a prosperous and empowered nation.
